Pre-Service Teacher Education
In BC, all those wishing to teach in public schools and in many independent schools, including all First Nations schools, must hold a BC College of Teachers' certificate. There are opportunities throughout BC to prepare for a career in K-12 education. Teacher education programs in BC have the right to recommend their graduates directly to the College either in a Letter of Understanding between the College and the Association of BC Deans of Education or through a process of program approval.
Admission to teacher education programs may vary depending on the individual program. For example, some programs within BC require their applicants to have a degree before they enter. Others allow students to enter with 60+ credits. Some programs award a Bachelor of Education degree while others are designed to allow the student to earn two degrees simultaneously.
