2009 Survey on Core French

We are interested in your thoughts about whether teachers educated in British Columbia should be required to complete a second language methodology course in the French language. We encourage you to read the “Core Strengthening” article in the winter 2009 issue of TC magazine and complete our online survey.

4. Please rate your agreement with the following statements.

a. All elementary teachers should demonstrate a basic level of French fluency.

b. All elementary teachers should be knowledgeable about French culture in Canada and around the world.

c. It is detrimental for students to study French with teachers who themselves cannot speak the language and who do not understand French culture.

d. It would be better to drop French or a second language from the curriculum at the intermediate level and to have students begin their language studies in secondary schools where teachers have typically studied the language and methods of teaching it.

e. As core French is the most common of the mandatory language course in elementary schools, the BC College of Teachers should be setting strong requirements for certification of elementary teachers in the area of teaching core French.
