Criteria for Admission

The College is responsible for ensuring that those applying to teach in BC meet the standards of education, competence and professional conduct. This includes the assessment of credentials, an evaluation of pre-certification teaching experience, and ensuring that those entering the profession are fit and proper persons to be in a position of authority with minors.

These rules are set out in the Bylaws of the College, but also by the Teaching Profession Act and help to ensure that public confidence in the teaching profession is maintained in British Columbia.

Section 25 of the Teaching Profession Act:

The college must not do any of the following:

  1. (a) issue a certificate of qualification to a person unless the person has met the relevant standards established by bylaw under section 23
  2. (b) admit a person as a member unless the person
    1. (i) meets the standards of qualifications and the standards of fitness established by bylaw under section 23
    2. (ii) satisfies the council that the person is of good moral character and is otherwise fit and proper to be granted membership.
