Investigations
Where the Preliminary Investigation Sub-Committee (PISC) believes that more
information on a complaint or report is required to make a proper
determination, it may order that an investigation be conducted.
The investigation is an objective, non-adversarial, information-collecting process. The
goal of the investigation is to obtain sufficient information, including the
member's response, for PISC to make a fair and well-informed decision about the
case. Information is gathered by way of documents and interviews and summarized
in an investigation report.
At the outset, the member is notified of the decision to investigate and receives a summary of
the allegations. The member is also given the opportunity, at an early stage,
to submit a response to the allegations if he or she so wishes, and again once
the report is completed.
Before or after an investigation, PISC may attempt to resolve the matter
informally or by way of a consent resolution agreement.
Once the investigation is concluded, PISC may close the file, proceed through
one of the alternative resolution process or determine that a hearing is necessary
in order for the allegations to be fully canvassed.
