Excusing Coursework Based on Experience (effective 2007)
This information applies to you only if you hold an interim certificate and are a current member of the College.
In 2007, the College Council introduced new bylaws and policies allowing interim certificate holders
to upgrade to a professional certificate by presenting relevant BC teaching experience instead of
completing certain coursework requirements. The maximum coursework that can be excused is 12 credits
of academic coursework and 6 credits of education coursework. English and French literature and
composition cannot be excused.
To qualify to have coursework excused:
-
You must have completed 1.5 years of teaching in BC on a full-time or part-time basis,
during which time you have taken on all the regular responsibilities as the classroom teacher.
Teacher on-call experience, or substitute teaching, is not accepted.
-
You must have completed this experience while holding a valid BC College of Teachers certificate.
-
Your superintendent, principal or vice principal must have observed you teaching
and must complete and send us an evaluation report that specifically addresses
your competency in teaching related to the required coursework.
To request to have your coursework excused, you must send us the following three items:
- a written request that you would like to have coursework excused
- a detailed teacher evaluation report in which your superintendent,
principal or vice principal attests to your competency in the specific subject matter of
the courses we asked you to complete
- verification of employment of full-time and/or part-time teaching in BC equivalent
to at least 1.5 years of full-time teaching.
